Your Kitchen Remodeling Planning Checklist

Spend a few days noticing how your kitchen works during real meals. Do two people compete for the same prep space? Does the open dishwasher block a walkway? Are everyday dishes stored far from where you use them? List the three changes that would make the biggest difference. Keep a separate list of nice-to-haves so a decorative choice does not crowd out the reason for remodeling.

Be specific. “More storage” could mean a pantry for bulk groceries, deep drawers for cookware, or a place to hide small appliances. Those are different design decisions. Bring a few photos of your current room and explain what each one illustrates.

2. Map the daily routine before discussing an island

Think through arriving with groceries, making coffee, preparing dinner and cleaning up. Note how the refrigerator, sink, cooking area, trash and pantry relate to each other. Also consider who passes through the kitchen without cooking. A larger island is not automatically an improvement if it makes circulation awkward.

Discuss appliance door swings, seating and drawer access with your designer. If you hope to move plumbing, remove a wall or change a window, flag that early so the team can evaluate the implications before the layout is treated as final.

3. Make a coordinated selections list

Cabinetry, appliances, countertops and fixtures should be considered together. An appliance model can affect a cabinet opening. A sink choice can affect the base cabinet and countertop details. A countertop decision can influence backsplash transitions. Keep the current selections in one document rather than scattered across texts and screenshots.

  • Appliances: model numbers, dimensions, installation information and whether you are keeping existing units.
  • Cabinetry: door style, finish, storage needs, hardware and any custom features.
  • Surfaces: countertop, backsplash and flooring samples viewed together in your home’s lighting.
  • Fixtures and lighting: sink, faucet, task lighting and decorative fixtures.
  • Open decisions: who will resolve each item and when it is needed.

4. Compare estimates by scope, not just the bottom line

Ask what is included in design, demolition, protection of adjacent areas, construction, finish installation and cleanup. Clarify which materials are allowances, which are selected products, and which items you will purchase yourself. Estimates built around different assumptions are difficult to compare fairly.

Discuss how changes and concealed conditions will be documented. Keep room in your planning for items that cannot be fully understood until the existing space is evaluated. Avoid treating a generic online cost range as a quote for your home; layout changes, existing conditions and selections all matter.

5. Plan life during construction

Decide how you will prepare meals, store groceries and keep children or pets away from the work area. Ask about access routes, deliveries, dust protection and daily communication. If you work from home, discuss the rooms you need to keep usable and any meetings that require quiet.

Agree on who approves selections and change requests. Having one clear point of contact can prevent conflicting instructions. Discuss the sequence and expected milestones with the team, while allowing for the actual scope, approvals and material availability.

6. Bring a compact project brief to your first meeting

Your brief does not need professional drawings. A page with your address, current-room photos, three priorities, must-keep items, desired timing and a comfortable investment range is a useful starting point. Add inspiration images with a sentence explaining what you like about each one. This helps separate a style preference from a functional requirement.
